The Cool Kids program has been developed by Macquarie University and is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It has a focus on teaching practical skills to manage anxiety and the common challenges which arise during childhood.
The program focusses on the following areas:
- Learning about feelings and anxiety
- Detective thinking
- Learning to think more realistically
- Fighting fear by facing fear
- Learning to solve problems
- Building assertiveness
- Dealing with teasing
Current results indicate that most young people who complete the program show significant improvement. Following the program, there are increases in school attendance, academic achievement, confidence, number of friends and involvement in extracurricular activities and decreases in worry, shyness, fear and family distress.
The Cool Kids program also has a parent component that equips parents with skills on how to support their child through anxiety.
