Parenting is often described as one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles a person can undertake. In today’s complex world, with a multitude of parenting advice focusing on children’s needs, emotions, and brain development, it is easy for parents to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and inadequate. When a child is struggling with anxiety, behavioural issues, or other mental health challenges, parents naturally want to fix the problem. However, this intense focus can sometimes inadvertently increase the child’s distress and lower their resilience.
At Sydney Psych Hub, our team of highly skilled and qualified psychologists is dedicated to providing holistic, evidence-based support for families. We are excited to share that 13 of our clinicians are now trained in the Parent Hope Project, a transformative, research-based program designed to empower parents and support children’s mental health by shifting the focus back to the parents themselves.

What is the Parent Hope Project?

The Parent Hope Project is a clinical intervention and parenting program developed by Dr. Jenny Brown, grounded in her extensive research and the principles of Bowen family systems theory. The core philosophy of the program is simple yet profound: Hope grows when the project is the parent, not the child.
Rather than focusing on what is wrong with the child or trying to “fix” their behaviour, the Parent Hope Project helps parents step back and look at how they manage themselves in their interactions with their child. It is a strengths-based approach that aims to reduce the anxious focus on the child and instead build the parent’s sense of agency and confidence.

The Foundation: Bowen Family Systems Theory

The program draws heavily on the concept of “Differentiation of Self” from Bowen family systems theory . This concept involves the ability to remain emotionally connected to family members without becoming overly fused or reactive to their emotions and behaviours.
In the context of parenting, differentiation-based parenting encourages parents to:
•Recognise that they and their child are distinct individuals.
•Avoid being overly directed by their child’s moods or behaviours.
•Maintain a sturdy, calm presence rather than reacting emotionally.
•Make thoughtful, principled decisions rather than seeking immediate fixes .
By fostering this separateness within a loving connection, children are given the space to learn how to self-regulate, solve problems independently, and manage natural emotions like disappointment and frustration .

What to Expect from the Program

The Parent Hope Project is not a typical parent education course that teaches specific disciplinary techniques or strategies. It is not about blaming parents for their child’s difficulties; rather, it acknowledges the complex factors that contribute to a child’s symptoms and focuses on what parents can control—their own responses.
When you engage in the Parent Hope Project with one of our trained clinicians at Sydney Psych Hub, you can expect a guided journey through a manualised program that typically involves several stages:

Stage 1: Stepping Back (Observation and Awareness)

In the initial sessions, the focus is on helping you observe the back-and-forth interactions between you and your child, especially when stress is high . You will learn to:
•See the patterns that fuel your child’s dependence or independence.
•Notice where your energy is directed (e.g., towards the child, your partner, or yourself).
•Become aware of your own emotional reactions and triggers.

Stage 2: Stepping Up (Adjusting Self)

As you become more self-aware, the program helps you adjust your interactions to promote your child’s growth in responsibility and wellbeing. You will work on:
•Recovering leadership by focusing on what is within your control (taking an “I” position).
•Building a stronger connection with the whole child, not just their problems.
•Developing patience for gradual improvement and seeing the bigger picture.

The Outcome: Renewed Hope and Confidence

Parents who complete the program often report a significant shift from feeling depleted, disillusioned, and frustrated to experiencing renewed hope, a clearer sense of direction, and increased confidence in their parenting abilities. As one parent shared after completing the course, “This course wasn’t about focussing on what I’m doing wrong but more on what I CAN do. What I’m in control of and working out how to do that better”.
